It can be - not as a proof, but as a genuine clue. In 1854 Bernhard Riemann described curved spaces of any dimension as pure abstraction, with no use in view. Sixty years later Einstein found that this decades-old fantasy was the exact grammar of gravity. Such stories are almost the rule in physics, and they pose a question the Nobel physicist Eugene Wigner named in a famous 1960 essay, "The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics in the Natural Sciences." He called the fit "a wonderful gift which we neither understand nor deserve." Group theory predicted the omega-minus particle (found in 1964); the "imaginary" complex numbers sit at the heart of quantum mechanics; Dirac's mathematics predicted antimatter before it was seen.

The argument is not a proof but an inference to the best explanation: the deep, predictive applicability of math is far less surprising if reality issues from a rational mind - a cosmos made through the Logos "through whom all things were made" - than if it is mindless. This is the conviction that helped midwife modern science, when Galileo held that nature "is written in the language of mathematics."

The strongest reply is selection, pressed by the mathematician Richard Hamming: we notice the math that works and forget the rest. That bites on descriptive fits, but not on the predictive cases - you cannot retroactively select a prediction of an unseen particle. Honestly, mathematically-motivated predictions also sometimes fail (supersymmetry so far), so the record is successes among genuine misses. But the misses are exactly why the hits resist being explained away. The data is conceded on all sides; the design reading is the contested step. It reaches a rational mind behind the world, not yet the full Christian God - one strand in a larger case.
