Something forced that shift, and the New Testament tells us what.
Jesus said and did things that, in his Jewish context, belonged to God alone. He forgave sins outright, which his hearers immediately recognized as a divine prerogative (Mark 2:5-7). He accepted worship. He claimed, "Before Abraham was, I am" (John 8:58), taking up the divine name from Exodus - and his audience picked up stones to kill him for blasphemy, because they understood exactly what he meant. He presented himself as the final judge of all humanity.
The earliest writings make this explicit. John opens, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1) - the Word both distinct from God and fully God. Paul quotes a hymn (Philippians 2) treating Jesus as divine that many scholars judge to predate his letter - and the letter itself was written around AD 60. Scholars call this a "high Christology," and its striking feature is how early it is - not a legend that developed over centuries, but the conviction of the first generation.
This is why the popular claim that "the Church invented Jesus's divinity at the Council of Nicaea in 325" fails: the documents affirming his deity were written more than 250 years before Nicaea. Nicaea didn't invent the doctrine - it defined and defended what Christians already believed and worshipped.
It's worth being precise about the claim. Christianity does not say Jesus was a god, or a created being promoted to divine status. It says the one eternal God exists as three persons - Father, Son, and Spirit - and that the Son took on human nature. Jesus is fully God and fully man, not half of each and not a lesser deity.
None of this is proof you can hand someone like a math result. But the historical evidence - the divine claims, the worship, the earliness - is far stronger than most people realize, and it is what the first eyewitnesses were willing to die for.
