The Argument from the Big Bang

The argument in brief

For most of history many thinkers assumed the universe was eternal. Twentieth-century cosmology overturned that picture. The expansion of space discovered by Edwin Hubble, the cosmic microwave background radiation, and the abundance of light elements all point to a finite past — a moment, commonly called the Big Bang, when the observable universe began. The principle in play is modest and intuitive: whatever begins to exist has a cause. The claim is not that "everything has a cause," but that things which come into being do not pop into existence from nothing on their own.

If the universe — all matter, energy, space, and time — began to exist, then it too plausibly has a cause. And that cause cannot itself be part of the physical universe; it would have to transcend space and time, be immensely powerful, and exist independently of the cosmos. Many find that this lines up strikingly well with what theists have long meant by God.

Sceptics rightly ask whether some cosmological model avoids a beginning. It is worth being careful here: cosmologist Alexander Vilenkin, co-author of a key theorem on this question, has said there are "no known models" that escape a past boundary "at this time" — a statement about the current state of the science, not a final proof. The honest conclusion is an inference to the best explanation, offered for examination rather than as a knock-down demonstration.

The form is valid — deny the conclusion and you must reject P1 or P2; nearly every objection targets P2, disputing whether the Big Bang really marks an absolute beginning rather than a transition from some prior state.

The intuition

Out of nothing, nothing comes. Things don't pop into being uncaused from non-being — if they could, it's inexplicable why we don't see anything and everything doing so constantly.

The track record

The causal principle is confirmed constantly across all of experience and science, and never once falsified. A premise with that standing is rational to hold even before any further argument.

Support for P2 — the universe began to exist

Expansion and the relic glow

Hubble's 1929 discovery that galaxies recede with distance showed the universe is expanding — run it backwards and everything converges to a hot, dense origin. The cosmic microwave background, found by Penzias and Wilson in 1965, is the leftover radiation from that early hot state — exactly what a Big Bang predicts.

Nucleosynthesis and a past boundary

Big Bang nucleosynthesis correctly predicts the cosmic ratio of hydrogen to helium forged in the first minutes. And the Borde–Guth–Vilenkin theorem (2003) shows that any universe expanding on average must have a past boundary — a beginning it cannot be extended through.

This is what separates someone who knows the Big Bang argument from someone who can defend it. We give the objection its best form first — never a strawman — then the reply.

Strongest form

The initial singularity is where classical general relativity stops working — infinite density is a sign the theory has broken, not a real first moment. A full theory of quantum gravity could smooth it into a transition from some earlier state, so there's no genuine beginning.

The Borde–Guth–Vilenkin theorem is independent of the singularity and of the unknown pre-Planck physics — it doesn't depend on general relativity holding all the way down. Even quantum-gravity models that keep an average expansion still inherit a past boundary. The beginning survives even if the classical singularity does not.

"Quantum cosmology lets the universe arise from nothing" Hard

Strongest form

Models like Hartle–Hawking's no-boundary proposal, or Krauss's account of the universe coming from the quantum vacuum, show the cosmos can emerge spontaneously "from nothing" — so no creator is required.

Those "nothings" are not non-being. A quantum state, a vacuum seething with energy, a set of physical laws — these are richly structured somethings. The question simply moves back a step: where did the quantum substrate and the laws governing it come from? Calling a law-governed state "nothing" is an equivocation, not an explanation.

"The multiverse / eternal inflation removes the beginning" Hard

Strongest form

In eternal inflation, our universe is one bubble nucleating out of an eternally inflating background. The background has always been inflating, so there's no overall beginning to explain.

The Borde–Guth–Vilenkin theorem applies directly to inflating multiverses: if the average expansion rate is greater than zero, spacetime cannot be past-eternal — it has a boundary. Vilenkin himself has said there are no known models of this kind that avoid a beginning. The multiverse pushes the beginning up a level; it doesn't erase it.

"A cyclic or bouncing universe is eternal" Trickier

Strongest form

Ekpyrotic and loop-quantum-cosmology models replace the singularity with a bounce — the universe contracts, rebounds, and expands again, cycling forever with no first moment.

Entropy accumulates across cycles (Tolman's old result): each bounce would be larger and longer than the last, so the cycles can't have been running forever — trace them back and they shrink to a beginning. BGV-type results plus thermodynamics push the same way, and most bounce models turn out to be past-incomplete on inspection.

"Even if it began, why a personal cause rather than impersonal?" Hard

Strongest form

Grant a cause of the Big Bang. Why think it's a mind that chooses, rather than some impersonal mechanism or law? You've reached at most a first cause, not a personal God.

A cause of all space and time is itself spaceless and timeless. But a timeless mechanical cause whose sufficient conditions are eternally present would produce an eternal effect — the effect would be as old as the cause. The universe is not eternal; it began a finite time ago. The only way a timeless cause yields a temporal effect is by a free act of will — agent causation. That points to a personal cause, not a mechanism.
