Does the Qur’an Contain Scientific Miracles?
One of the most popular arguments in modern Muslim outreach is that the Qur’an contains scientific facts that no one in the seventh century could have known — the stages of the human embryo, an expanding universe, mountains with deep roots, a barrier between two seas — and that this “scientific miracle” (in Arabic, i’jaz ’ilmi) proves the book came from God. On a first hearing it can be genuinely arresting. A verse from the year 620 seems to describe something confirmed only by modern instruments; the coincidence can feel too precise to be accidental. Many sincere Muslims find it deeply persuasive, and they share it because they love God and trust their book.
It deserves a careful hearing and an honest answer — and this essay gives it one. Weighed on its own terms, the argument does not hold. Not because the Qur’an is a crude or foolish book, but because every example turns out to be one of three things: an idea already available in the seventh century, a vague phrase read backwards after modern science supplied the meaning, or a claim that modern science actually contradicts. Let us take the argument at full strength and see why.
Where the argument comes from — and where it doesn’t
The first clue is the argument’s age. For most of Islamic history, the Qur’an’s claimed “inimitability” (i’jaz) meant its literary perfection — the beauty and force of its Arabic — not its science. The scientific version is a twentieth-century development. It was crystallized by the French surgeon Maurice Bucaille in his 1976 book The Bible, the Qur’an and Science,1 then institutionalized in Saudi Arabia through the Commission on Scientific Signs in the Qur’an and Sunnah, associated with Abdul Majeed al-Zindani,2 and carried to mass audiences by popularizers such as Zakir Naik and the Turkish writer “Harun Yahya.”
That date is not a trivia point; it is the heart of the problem. An interpretation invented after the science it claims to predict cannot be evidence that the text predicted anything. If the meaning of a verse was only discovered once astronomers or embryologists had done the work, then the verse did not deliver the knowledge — the reader imported it. This single structural flaw reappears at every example below.
The flagship: embryology
The showpiece of the whole genre is a passage on human development: “We created man from an extract of clay. Then We made him as a drop (nutfah) in a firm lodging. Then We made the drop into a clinging clot (’alaqah), and made the clot into a lump (mudghah), and made the lump into bones, and clothed the bones with flesh” (Surah 23:12–14). Advocates point to a celebrated endorsement: al-Zindani obtained a statement of admiration from the Canadian embryologist Keith Moore, whose textbook The Developing Human appeared in a special edition interleaved with Qur’anic and hadith citations.3
But the stages the Qur’an lists — drop, clinging clot, chewed lump, bones, then flesh — closely track the sequence taught by the Greek physician Galen in the second century ad, whose staged embryology was standard medical knowledge across the Hellenized Near East and had reached Syriac medicine well before Islam. (The great Arabic translations of Galen came later — and, tellingly, they reused these very Qur’anic terms for his stages.) The historian Basim Musallam, surveying medieval Islamic medicine, concluded that “the stages of development which the Qur’an and hadith established for believers agreed perfectly with Galen’s scientific account… there is no doubt that medieval thought appreciated this agreement.”4 In other words, the content was already in the air the seventh century breathed.
And where the Qur’an differs from modern embryology, it tends to track the ancient picture rather than the true one. The word ’alaqah is the linchpin of the modern claim. Da’wah presentations re-translate it as “leech-like” or “that which clings,” and match it to the way the early embryo implants and clings to the wall of the womb — and this, in substance, is what Keith Moore was shown and praised. But the re-translation is itself a retrofit. In the classical Arabic lexica and the older tafsir, ’alaqah means clotted or congealed blood — the ancient idea of the embryo’s first stage — and the “leech” gloss was reached for in the twentieth century precisely because it fits what embryology had by then discovered. Read in its own century, the word carries the old picture, not the new one. And the order “bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh” describes the skeleton forming first and muscle added afterward — whereas in fact the bones and the surrounding muscle develop concurrently from the differentiating mesoderm, not skeleton-first. The physician William Campbell, who wrote the standard point-by-point reply to Bucaille, pressed exactly this: read as science, the sequence is not ahead of its time but behind the facts.5 None of this makes the passage absurd for its era — it is a competent restatement of the best available seventh-century embryology. That is precisely the point: it is seventh-century, not twentieth.
Reading modern meaning backwards
The second move in the genre is retrofitting — pouring a modern discovery into an old, vague phrase. The favourite case is the expanding universe. “And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are its expander (musi’un)” (Surah 51:47). Modern advocates render the last word “expanding it” and hear an echo of Hubble. But the classical commentators heard nothing of the kind: the older tafsir tradition, including Ibn Kathir, glosses musi’un as God’s power and vastness — “We are able,” “possessors of might” — with no thought of cosmic expansion.6 The astronomical reading is a modern overlay laid on a word that meant something else for a thousand years.
The same pattern covers the rest of the standard list. Mountains called “stakes” or “pegs” (Surah 78:7) become plate tectonics and isostasy; iron “sent down” (Surah 57:25) becomes supernova nucleosynthesis; the “barrier between two seas” (Surah 55:19–20) becomes the halocline between fresh and salt water. In every case the Arabic is a vivid, ordinary image a desert people would recognize, and the physics is supplied by the reader. The word for “sent down,” anzala, is used elsewhere in the very same Qur’an for cattle (Surah 39:6) and clothing (Surah 7:26) — and no one reads those as arriving from meteorites. When a word only becomes miraculous in the one verse a debater needs, the miracle is in the debating, not the text.
The verses the argument leaves out
A method that cites only its hits is not doing science; it is scoring a highlight reel. Set beside the “miracle” verses are others that read most naturally as the cosmology of their day. Dhul-Qarnayn travels west until “he found the sun setting in a spring of dark mud” (Surah 18:86). The sky is a solid “protected ceiling” that God holds back from falling on the earth (Surah 21:32; 22:65). The stars are lamps set in the lowest heaven that double as missiles hurled at eavesdropping devils (Surah 67:5; 37:6–10). The heavens themselves are seven, in stacked layers (Surah 67:3). A defender can read some of these perspectivally — as how the world looked to an observer, just as the Bible speaks of the sun “rising” — and that reading is fair enough. But notice what it costs the argument: if these verses merely describe the world as seventh-century eyes saw it, they are not scientific miracles — and neither, by the same measure, are the verses on the other side of the ledger. What you cannot do is bank the verses that flatter modern science and quietly set aside the ones that don’t. Judged by one consistent standard, the Qur’an’s cosmos is the ordinary cosmos of late antiquity.
The test that passes everything
The deepest problem is the method itself. Retrofitting has been applied, with equal “success,” to the Bible, to the Hindu Vedas, and even to secular literature — critics have famously “discovered” relativity and space flight hidden in nursery rhymes precisely to expose the trick. A test that any sufficiently poetic text can pass is not a test at all. If the technique validates the Qur’an, it validates a whole shelf of mutually contradictory scriptures — which means it validates none of them. An argument that proves too much proves nothing.
Muslim scholars say so too
This is not merely a Christian objection lobbed from outside. Some of the sharpest critics of i’jaz ’ilmi are Muslim scientists. The astrophysicist Nidhal Guessoum judges the Bucaille approach methodologically bankrupt, warning that it stakes faith on readings that collapse the moment a “confirmed” interpretation is overturned by the next textbook.7 The writer and physicist Ziauddin Sardar long ago dismissed the genre as apologetic pseudo-science that flatters believers rather than instructing them.8 The scientific-miracle claim is contested within Islam; it is a popular apologetic, not a settled Muslim consensus.
The verdict — and a better place to stand
So the honest verdict is plain, and it should be stated plainly: the Qur’an does not contain scientific miracles. Its “scientific” verses are, on inspection, seventh-century ideas already available at the time (Galenic embryology, the cosmology of late antiquity), vague phrases retrofitted with meaning after the fact, or images that modern science simply contradicts. The argument fails on its own terms.
It is worth being equally careful about what this does not show. It does not, by itself, settle whether Islam is true — a book can be humanly authored and still say true things about God and morality; that is a separate question, taken up in the other essays in this section. What fails here is one specific proof of divine authorship, not every claim the Qur’an makes.
And the failure quietly points to something worth noticing about how the Christian faith makes its case. Christianity does not rest on hidden codes that only become impressive once modern science catches up. It rests on a claim that anyone in the first century could check and anyone today can investigate: that Jesus of Nazareth was crucified, was buried, and was raised bodily, and was seen by named witnesses who were willing to die for what they said they had seen (1 Corinthians 15:3–8). That is a public, historical, falsifiable claim — the very opposite of a verse that only turns miraculous in hindsight. In conversation with a Muslim friend, we do not need the science-miracle move, and we should not imitate it; we can point instead to the one event that either happened or did not, in daylight, in history.
Say all of this gently. Those who share the scientific-miracle argument overwhelmingly do so out of sincere devotion and confidence in their book, and they deserve respect, not ridicule (1 Peter 3:15). The kindest thing we can do is not pretend the argument works. It is to show, honestly and without triumph, why it does not — and then to offer, in its place, a hope that stands on ground you can actually walk on.
