And you can't explain the whole collection of contingent things by appealing to still more contingent things - that only pushes the question back a step. The chain has to rest on something that exists by its own nature and cannot fail to exist: a necessary being. That isn't just one more item in the universe; it is the reason there is a universe at all. Christians recognise that being as the God who said, "I AM WHO I AM" (Exodus 3:14).
